Episode 459 – Another year down

This week, we’re calling it stumps for 2019!

Kodak brings back Ektachrome and 4×5 film.

If you haven’t yet done a photo tour of Antelope Canyon, you’re too late. They’re stopping the tours.

Ian Collard wrote to ask about my thoughts on the Sony 70-200/4 lens.
In my response, I suggested he check out my images from day 6 of our Sri Lanka holiday. This was the day we did our safari in Yala National Park, and I spent the whole day with that lens on my a7iii.

Adam wrote to tell us about Nikon getting into the memory card business with the launch of their XQD cards.
At the same time, they’re rescinding (some/all?) of their Authorised Service Centre accreditation across the U.S. So if you need your Nikon serviced, you’ll need to send it back to the company.

Glynn mentioned the love fest going on surrounding Photokina 2020.

And MIT announces an imaging system which can recreate images based solely on moving shadows. Creepy!

I have been a professional audio engineer since the mid 80's and am happy to do for free in my spare time what I get paid to do during the week. I created Shutters Inc in May 2005, and it is today (as best as I can tell) THE longest-running photography podcast in the world.

My comments on the last episode:

    (1) Can I suggest, after listening to Glynn’s stirring and obviously heart-felt rendition of ‘White Christmas’ at the start of the last podcast, that should he be serious about giving away photography, I’m sure there’d be a promising future for him as: a Part-Time Lift Attendant, a Pizza Delivery Scheduler or a Train Spotter’s Assistant.

    (b) When I was listening to all those esoteric things one can do with a smart phone – dim the lights, surveil one’s children, chastise the cat – I couldn’t help thinking of the Shutters Inc mantra that ‘Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should’.

(iii) The Deep And Meaningful Discussion on Photography and Sound Recording where one can enjoy the process but not necessarily appreciate the end result very much resonates with me every time I look at my children.

(𝛿) Lastly, and on behalf of my five fellow S I podcast listeners, can I give my deep appreciation of the holiday hiatus you have afforded us by giving us a month off.

    Regards,
    Rob Coates, Perth.
