Episode 425 – The Gaz-GG-Kaminesky Trifecta

This week,
David Marland wrote in to tell us about the work that Topaz Labs is doing with AI-assisted reconstruction of RAW data FROM compressed jpegs!
Amazing idea, and the early results look impressive. This is a technology which will no doubt advance quite rapidly.

Steve Peters told us about how the AIPP is going in to bat for us on airline bag policy.

Adam picked up this sad story on how 500px banned a photographer because his photos not ‘photographic’ enough.

Glynn mentioned the interview with the Canon CEO, who revealed his dim view of the future of the camera business.

Olympus is cranking outt he new toys, with their flagship OM-D M1-X, and a lovely big 150-400/4.5 lens!

He also mentioned the (iOS only) Panoram app, which will cut your panoramas up into social-friendly aspect ratios.

And we wrap up the episode with a chat with Ken Kaminesky, the brave, crazy, insert-your-adjective-of-choice-here guy who is jointly running the Tanzania trip with Glynn. Or is it the other way ’round? 🙂

I have been a professional audio engineer since the mid 80's and am happy to do for free in my spare time what I get paid to do during the week. I created Shutters Inc in May 2005, and it is today (as best as I can tell) THE longest-running photography podcast in the world.

Thanks for the mention and answering the question.
I listen to quite a few photography podcasts and I find Shutters Inc. to be the most relaxed.

Today I did a road trip and as a consequence I have listened to all this years podcasts. As a result of Glynn’s new year “rant” I am contributing instead of being completely passive.
I had a personal interest in Bruce’s machinations regarding his new camera – we are both Sony users and I went through a very similar process before I purchased my Sony A7r all those years ago. I too love the Electronic View Finder. I do have a slight problem with it at night in that it is too bright and when I think I have nailed my star shot in the field I find that it is underexposed the next day when I view the image on the computer. Yes my older A7r does chew through the batteries and yes in a full day of shooting I can use two fully charged batteries. This is not a problem as I am aware of it and ensure that I always have two fully charged spare batteries. The vertical grip came with the “deal” when I got my camera. I did put it on to try but have never used it.

I am interested in your discussion regarding the 75 to 200mm lens. Did you consider getting a 1.4 or 2 times teleconverter to extend the range?

Can I post images here? or should I post on the facebook page?

Still here and still enjoying the podcast – listener number 8?
