Shutters Inc – episode 104

Shelton continues his series on planning the wedding day shoot.
This week, your equipment list, plus shooting at the bride’s house.
Here’s the shot Shelton mentioned of the bride, taken in the hallway of her own house using nothing more than side lighting:

Plus, here’s a few more shots taken in various brides’ homes:

Also, Jason Paige sent us a pdf of the things that identify his personal photography style. Well worth a look!
And Landon Michaelson came through with some bokeh examples (Onya, Maaaate!)….

I have been a professional audio engineer since the mid 80's and am happy to do for free in my spare time what I get paid to do during the week. I created Shutters Inc in May 2005, and it is today (as best as I can tell) THE longest-running photography podcast in the world.

    Bruce and Shelton,

Great show! I always look forward to the next installment and they never fail to delight.

I am curious as to why Shelton likes the 85MM f1.8 so much for wedding photography, say, in comparison to a 90 or 105mm f2.8 lens.

The Tamron 90mm f2.8, Sigma 105 F2.8 and others are superbly sharp and a 105mm offer a little more compression which I would have thought would be an excellent mid range choice as a portrait lens.

Is it because of the faster aperture or because the larger aperture creates greater background blur on the 85mm?

By the way I am told from a Japanese friend at Tamron that the word “Bokeh”, a Japanese word, is not pronounced as in the Canadian “eh” but rather a soft “e” as in the sound of the “e” in the word “bet.”

The term bokeh can be used for a number of descriptions including one who is “fuzzy headed.” 🙂

    Great shows,

    Barry

    Shelton (and Bruce),
I thoroughly enjoyed episode 104. As someone interested in wedding photography, I have found the last two podcasts very informative and helpful. Your podcasts is one of the bright spots of my week, and without a doubt, has made me a better photographer. Thank you so much! 🙂

Truly excellent podcast: informative, motivating and at the same time entertaining. Shelton, your tips are really invaluable and the main reason for that is that you seem to be a totally instinctive photographer.
Bruce thank you for producing this podcast and to both of you: keep up these highly interesting conversations.
    Best greetings from Switzerland!
